The Ras Malé project, known as the Maldives Eco City, was officially inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. This is the largest land reclamation project in the country, covering 1,150 hectares of land in Fushi Dhiggaru Lagoon, near Malé.  

At the inaugural function, the President stated that the city aims to address the housing crisis in the country by providing over 65,000 housing solutions.   

The city will be elevated two meters at its edges and three meters at its center to address climate change concerns. Ras Malé will run entirely on renewable energy, ensuring that transportation and infrastructure prioritize renewable energy sources for a zero-carbon, green and sustainable urban environment, adhering to international climate adaptation standards. Plans are underway to seamlessly connect the Maldives Eco City to Malé with a state-of-the-art transportation system, including hydrofoil technology and a ferry network equipped with modern express speed boats. 

The city will also be designed to be inclusive and accessible to all, including those with disabilities. The infrastructure will encompass accessible roads, public spaces, and buildings to enable easy mobility and full participation in all aspects of city life. This commitment to inclusivity extends to every facet of the city, guaranteeing that all individuals can fully engage and enjoy the city’s offerings to the fullest.   

Additionally, The President also emphasised plans to construct an airstrip near Fushi Dhiggaru Lagoon, connected to Ras Malé, are in progress ensuring it would not disrupt the operations at Velana International Airport. These developments aim to expand trade, revenue, and employment opportunities.  

The First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, and his spouse, Aishath Afreen Mohamed, were in attendance at the inaugural function.
