Community gardens in Hulhumalé city is proposed on a city-owned land with equally divided allotments awarding to groups of 6 local residents within the city to grow fresh food while participating in sustainable urban practices, building community connections through shared activities, and as well as enjoying the harvest together. In addition to the garden lots, HDC also plans to include a tools shed with 16 mini storage space, a seed incubator shed and a universal public toilet.
As community gardens are not only to produce food but to increase social connection between members of the garden and the whole community, HDC’s strategy aims to engage all ages. However, focusing on youth and seniors are more favorable as they have energy, time and unique perspectives to share with the community.
