With the aim of restoring and preserving Esjehi Ganduvaru as an historical icon, HDC has decided to acquire the place from its owner to relocate the palace at Farukolhufushi in Hulhumalé which is planned to be developed as a Cultural Island.

Esjehi Ganduvaru was built by the nobleman, Esjehi Ganduvaru Maafaiy Kilegefaanu in the 1870s during the period when old Friday mosque and the Minaret were built.

The origins of the beautifully carved wooden panels are said to be linked with shipwrecks from the distant past.

The house currently known as “Esjehige” is currently serving as a café amidst the busy urban city of Male’ where its historical significance is largely unnoticed. HDC aims to re-open ‘Esjehige’ as a gallery for artists to communicate their ideas while general public and tourists will be given the opportunity to experience the cultural heritage that Esjehige holds.
