There’s a difference of land and sky in how we began, and where we are now.

Reclaimed land from the seas of Maldives gave rise to new opportunities in the year 2001, fortifying the future of every little child, every retired elder and young opportunist – for the first time the whole Country dared to dream of a world that is entirely distinct from the Crowded capital of Maldives, Malé. The reclaimed land of Hulhumalé is the beginning of Housing Development Corporation (HDC). Soon after the tsunami that struck Maldives in 2004 shaking the very core of our Country, safer islands concept came into being. A challenge for us to take on with nature itself, to beat climate change at every turn all while the Maldives’ inevitable topography makes us its easiest target. But we have found our defense and we will continue to do so, in hopes of creating a smart and safeguarding Island in Hulhumalé.

HDC is a leader of real estate in Maldives, encompassing institutional, commercial, residential, recreational, industrial, real-estate and hospitality mega projects, enhancing public safety and innovative initiatives, providing affordable housing in attractive and economically sound communities, ensuring accessibility for all and fostering, social, economic and environmental sustainability in Hulhumalé.

In the year 2020, when the whole world spiraled into hopelessness, owing to an immense spread of a new virus, HDC was merged with two reclaimed islands rising to meet the increasing demand of industrialization in Maldives – Gulhifalhu & Thilafushi. For the Corporation, this obligation was entrusted in the midst of a global trial itself. Nevertheless, the huge responsibility was welcome even though the uncertainty and profoundness which came alongside the obligations did not go unnoticed. Two years after the merger, Kudagiri was another reclaimed Island brought to life by a presidential decree. The responsibility of the Island was later united with the other three Islands.

HDC is now in charge of the development of Hulhumalé, Thilafushi, Gulhifalhu and Kudagiri – the significance of these islands and their impact on the Maldives’ economy is undoubtable. Responsibility lies heavy on the five pillars of the Corporation. You can imagine while the Corporation has already designed a smart city that is very much alive for everyone to witness, designing and developing three islands with a nationwide direction would not be the same as starting a new book, but definitely a new chapter.

With all these mighty challenges in the horizon, the Corporation is starting out by redefining its whole identity and introducing the brand Urbanco.
